M240B Machine Gun: Don’t Forget the Scraper Tool

BLUF: Make sure to clean the entire M240B gas system.

Dear Editor,

I read your article M240B Machine Gun: Properly Clean the Gas System to Avoid Malfunction. It provided some good information, but it didn’t mention using the scraper combination regulator tool, NSN 4933-01-033-1503, to clean the gas regulator plug.

WP 0022 of TM 9-1005-313-10 (May 22) provides instructions on removing and cleaning the gas regulator using the scraper combination regulator tool. Soldiers should note that if the gas regulator plug can’t be removed by hand, the M240B needs to go in for maintenance.

They should also use the 7/16-in washer on the regulator. This allows the use of the gas collar to turn the regulator into the scraper.

There’s no brush listed in the -10 TM for cleaning the gas hole bushing. Soldiers can use the M2 chamber brush, NSN 1005-00-766-0915.

Pile or carbon and copper chips can be removed from the gas port hole in the barrel using the reamer tool, NSN 4933-01-047-3394.

The final step is to store the 7/16-in washer on the scraper tool using the protective cap.

Soldiers, be sure to clean the whole gas system to keep your M240 firing.
