JLTV: Disconnect AFES Before Maintenance

 If you operate or maintain a Joint Light Tactical Vehicle (JLTV), be aware that the automatic fire extinguishing system (AFES) can accidentally discharge during vehicle maintenance. There are even reports of Soldiers being injured by accidental discharges!

That’s why you have to deactivate the AFES before doing any vehicle maintenance that requires disconnecting the batteries. Find the instructions for deactivating the AFES in WP M76004 of TM 9-2320-452-23&P (Oct 18).
